The Train
was actually two identical trains. One was actual rolling stock from BC Rail, repainted with the "WestRail" logo.

Train Wreck The other was the wrecked train, painted identically and hauled up the mountain to be exploded. Train Wreck
In addition to the real train pieces, bought from a stockpile of decommissioned cars, foam wheels, rails, spikes, and other mechanical replicas were fabricated as wreckage. Train Wreck The Special FX team laid underground pipe and used 25,000 gallons of propane to create the 7-story nuclear blast, later computer enhanced.
Yet another train was brought into action as a chase train. Rob Lowe played the NTSB agent trying to stop the runaway carrying an unstable nuclear bomb. Helo Transfer

Denver Control
watched the runaway train closely, but did not survive the nuclear blast. Its marbled checkerboard floors, WPA style artwork, high arched windows and huge video screens were reduced to smithereens for the last shot of filming.
